iOS 17: Apple’s Leap into the Future with Smart Home-Style Displays
Apple Inc., the tech giant known for its innovative and user-centric approach, is reportedly planning to introduce a new feature with iOS 17 that will transform locked iPhones into smart home-style displays. This exciting development was first reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and later covered by TechCrunch.
The new feature will reportedly allow the iPhone to display information such as calendar appointments, weather updates, and notifications in a smart home display style when the phone is locked and positioned horizontally. This interface is expected to operate similarly to smart home devices from Google and Amazon, making iPhones more useful even when they’re not actively being used.
The smart home-style display will build upon Apple’s lock screen widgets, which were launched as part of iOS 16. These widgets allow users to see small snippets of information, such as weather updates and news, below the time on their lock screens. The new feature will use a dark background with bright text, making it easier to read from a distance.
Apple is also reportedly working on bringing this smart home-style display feature to the iPad. However, the company’s track record suggests that features are typically introduced to the iPhone before they make their way to the iPad.
In addition to this, Apple is planning to introduce significant changes to the iPhone’s Wallet app with iOS 17 and will add enhancements to its location services. Other changes include the addition of a dedicated journaling app designed to help users log their thoughts, updates for SharePlay, and improvements to AirPlay.
SharePlay is a feature that allows users to stream TV shows, movies, and music in sync with friends and family while on a FaceTime call. Meanwhile, AirPlay lets users stream or share content from their Apple devices to their Apple TV or compatible smart TV. Apple is reportedly in talks with hotels to make it easier for users to stream video and audio to devices they don’t own.
Apple’s Health app is also expected to receive updates, including tools for tracking emotions and managing vision conditions, such as nearsightedness.
Apple is likely to reveal the smart home-style display feature alongside iOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5. The tech giant is also expected to release its new AR/VR headset and the xrOS powering it, alongside new Mac laptops and software.
This upcoming update is a testament to Apple’s commitment to innovation and enhancing user experience. With iOS 17, Apple is set to redefine the way we use our iPhones, making them even more integral to our daily lives.
